S.C.T.C Open Show Watlington May 5th - Judge Mr Reinier Goud

Well some of us must have been good as our prayers were answered and the rain stayed away. It was not as warm as it has been other years but at least it was dry.

Reinier had a very good entry of 70 dogs, and on behalf of Reinier and the Committee I would like to thank all those who entered for making it such a nice day. Even the Red Kites seemed to enjoy it as they continuously circled over head. I am assured they were not looking for lunch but they certainly seemed very interested us.

Talking of lunch Hazel and Co once again came up trumps and as it was Dutch Liberation Day the Judges dinner table was duly decorated in the most awful orange tablecloth and matching napkins. I trust it did not put him off his food too much. He’s lucky I could not find a duvet cover the same colour or he would have slept in orange.

I have not spoken to Reinier since we dropped him at the airport but Margolia says he told her he had a very nice time.

Our AGM went smoothly with a request for anyone who could become our Year book Editor as the post has now become vacant, and the show started more or less on time. Owing to the large entry we finished a little later than usual and a big thanks to our all the Stewards who kept things moving or we might have still been there at twilight. An extra thanks to all of you who once again helped with the setting up and clearing away.

Presentations were was made to Wendy and Sonya for all their hard work over past years and although they have both had to give up their Committee positions have both said they would continue to support the S.C.T.C. and Sonya has kindly agreed to continue to be our Puppy Liaison Officer.

Gill was on her usual site with the Raffle and her plant stall and I’m sure if she never sold you tickets then Pat did when she did the rounds. The Club stand looked very pretty with all the new stock. Anne and David again did a splendid job with the Cups and I sometimes saw Anne covering the Club Stand, my apologies for not being much help at the show but I did do my bit behind the scenes as landlady and chauffeur to the Judge.

I think I have covered everything and look forward to seeing you all again for the Autumn Show at Lewknor under Louise Peers and lets hope its warmer.

SCTC Championship Show - 25th Feb 2012
19/03/2012

S.C.T.C. CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 24th February 2012

Well another year of showing has begun with our Championship show judged by Mrs Alma Smee being the first on the Club show circuit.

As a result of the members ballot this year the show was changed back to February and there was some concern about inclement weather, however when the day dawned it was like the middle of Spring .

A minutes silence was held in memory of two of our Members whom we lost over the Christmas period, Mrs Judy Parker Tucker and Mrs Liz Thompson who finally lost her battle with cancer. Both will be sadly missed.

Anne and David Kippen have taken over as Cup Stewards and did a wonderful job of showing the Cups to their best advantage, they looked lovely shining in the sunlight.

Owing to the ill health of one of our Ring Stewards the Committee would like to thank Mrs. Francis Goldfinch for her hard work when she held the fort on her own for the first part of the show, also grateful thanks to Chris Hewitt who stepped in and helped after lunch.

Talking of lunch, as usual a sterling job was done by Hazel and Co who kept us supplied with Tea and Coffee all day together with the delightful smelling bacon rolls, lunch and those wicked cakes.

As well as the usual Raffle, Club stand and Book stall it was a pleasure to welcome Pam ( Steve Thompson's sister) who bought along a selection of the lovely garments knitted by Liz and we hope she had a profitable day as some of the proceeds are going to Steves chosen Cancer Charity in memory of Liz.

Lastly we would like to thank all those who although not Committee members unfailingly give up their time and help with setting up the show and clearing up afterwards. Without these people we would struggle to have such successful shows.

Sorry for the lateness in this newsletter but a minor bug got the better of me for a few days.

Needless to say the advice is as usual with these sorts of emails, don't open if you don't recognize and certainly don't click on any links.

Almost certainly if the links had been followed a request for money would have been the next thing together with some nasty computer virus. Just delete and run your virus checker.

KC ANNOUNCEMENT - Exhibitor Crate Identification
16/02/2012

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL DOG SHOW EXHIBITORS

The Kennel Club has announced an important new requirement which will affect exhibitors competing at Crufts next month, and all other dog shows with immediate effect.

The General Committee of the Kennel Club has approved a recommendation which requires exhibitors to display the exhibit/bench number on their crate, cage or container at all times. This is particularly important when cages etc are not on benches, and at unbenched shows.

Each exhibitor is responsible for providing their own crate or cage identification and should note that the original exhibit/bench number card, as provided by the show society, must not be used for this purpose.

This requirement follows a recent meeting of the Show Executive Sub-Committee’s Benching Working Party, where it was agreed that it is important to be able to contact exhibitors and identify dogs where a dog may be in distress or where the crate might be blocking a gangway.

At benched shows soft crates may only be put on benches if they are the appropriate size for both the dog and the bench, and the crate can be securely attached to the bench.

Both of these points have been introduced with the safety of all in mind, but most importantly that of the dog, and to minimise potential incidents and injuries.

Exhibitors should note that the above requirements have been introduced with immediate effect and will therefore apply to exhibitors attending Crufts.

The Kennel Club would also take this opportunity to remind exhibitors that Show Regulation F(1).17 requires that dogs should be present on their benches at all times except when being judged, prepared for exhibition or exercised.

Should anyone have this in safe keeping please contact:

Debbie McIntyre on 01753 543865 or email on damcintyre@hotmail.co.uk

and I will arrange to pick it up.

Many thanks

SCTC CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW - Thank you From Debbie McIntyre
04/07/2011

The Committee would like to thank all of you who came to our Championship show on 25th June, especially the Scottish contingency.
We really appreciate your attendance in view of the horrific price of petrol. It’s a shame Yvonne never had a bigger car she could have taken home all the Cups she and Carol won and never had room for. Perhaps she could invest in a trailer ready for next year.

We hope you all liked our new ring mats in the club colour perhaps
a couple of the dogs were not very impressed and left suitable messages advising of the fact. Anyway it’s christened now and smells nice and doggy.

Lunch was served by our very capable caterers Hazel & Co. and looking at the empty plates most people enjoyed it. Cakes looked very yummy too.

Apologies to all those who won our Special Cups and did not have them
awarded in the Ring as usual but it was decided to just hand them out to hurry the proceedings along.

Once again thanks to every body who came and hope to see you all again on 25th February 2012

UK Cairn Terrier Symposium - Saturday 16 July 2011
10/11/2010

Message from Ferelith Somerfield

The Joint Cairn Terrier Clubs UK Cairn Terrier Symposium

I am very concerned that British Cairn Terrier lovers should fully understand the significance of our Symposium planned for the 16 July next year.

Our breed is at a crossroads and we need to decide which way we want to go. We have to face the fact that entries at shows are dropping and so further sets of CC’s will be lost. Registrations are falling and generally we need to attract new people into the breed. I personally am delighted when I see a young person competing, but are we doing enough to keep them interested and do they feel welcome?

Over the years the breed has changed. Some changes are good of course, but are we, often unwittingly, changing the essential type? Is today’s Cairn too sculptured? Or too exaggerated? Are we relying too much on ‘potions and lotions’ for our presentation?

Are we doing enough to guard the health of the breed? Important steps in this area are being taken, but are they enough? We are fortunate to have good people to lead us, but are we giving them the right support? The same can be said about the rescue of Cairns in distress. Again we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated people in charge of this, but do we ordinary people give the necessary support?

Are we doing enough to encourage new specialist judges? Good though many non-specialist judges are and I would be the last person to say they are not necessary for the well-being of our breed, we also need to bring on our own new, younger judges to take the place of our ageing population.

There has been criticism of our Breed Standard. Does it meet today’s need: should it be amended or enlarged? Or would too much detail go against the Cairn Terrier envisaged by its founders?

All these area will be discussed at the Symposium and we need the views of everyone who loves our breed. Of course we want to see our best breeders, exhibitors and judges, but we also need to see the people who breed the occasional litter or go to the occasional local show. Often these will be the people who see most for the very reason that they are not chasing breed records etc. and will recognise what we need to do to take our wonderful breed forward. We desperately want their input and to know what they think. This goes for every single person who is interested enough to join a breed club.

The Symposium is being carefully planned so that all these points can be discussed. The idea is that everyone’s views will be taken on board for full discussion by the clubs. Those who do not like speaking can always forward their views to their breed club or get someone else to speak for them. We need to have a detailed plan before we run the breed’s World Symposium, and to do this we need everyone’s help.

Further information, details of the programme and booking forms will be circulated with Club Year books early in 2011. In the meantime any inquiries regarding the Symposium can be made to Frances Goldfinch, email goldfinch@kanawha.freeserve.co.uk or Tel: 01304 851818
